Equipping users with visual impairments with tools to navigate public transportation

Problem

Majority of public transportation information is relayed through visual cues, for example:

- Bus stop locations often have physical signs
- Bus schedules are often physically posted on posters
- Bus stops are rarely announced

Audio is also limited on a bus because not all routes provide audio feedback for riders, which makes it difficult for a visually impaired person to know what stop is approaching. Especially during peak travel times it’s difficult to hear audio feedback.



Solution

The “Where-able” is a solution that helps visually impaired riders navigate public transportation. The solution is an app on their cellular device and a wearable device on their wrist that will provide haptic feedback based to give them cues whether to get on a bus, or off the bus.
